# How SEOmator works

> How SEOmator turns daily AI answers to your prompts into counts of brands, sources and changes in your reports.

SEOmator asks AI assistants the questions your buyers ask, once a day, and keeps every answer. In each answer it finds the brands you track and the pages the assistant read, cited and linked. Your reports count those answers, so every percentage comes with the counts behind it, such as "Named in 42 of 378 answers".

## Organizations and projects

An **organization** holds your projects, members, API keys and billing. Everyone in it shares one plan and one credit balance.

A **project** is one site in one market: a country and a language. To track another market for the same site, add it as its own project. See [Projects and setup](https://docs.seomator.com/getting-started/projects.md).

## Prompts

A **prompt** is a question your buyers ask AI, for example "best popup builder for Shopify". During setup, SEOmator writes a first set from your site's profile and the searches your buyers type. You can add, edit and archive prompts at any time on [Prompts](https://docs.seomator.com/setup/prompts.md). Editing a prompt creates a new prompt; the old one is archived with its history.

Each prompt has three labels:

| Label | Values | What it tells you |
| - | - | - |
| Topic | One of your topics | The theme the prompt belongs to. Reports can be split and filtered by topic. |
| Intent | **Research**, **Compare** or **Buy** | The buyer's stage: learning about a problem, choosing between products, or ready to buy. |
| Type | **Branded** or **Non-branded** | Whether the prompt names your brand. SEOmator decides this from the prompt's text. |

Which prompt types the reports count: [Filter reports](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/filters.md#type).

## Assistants

SEOmator asks every prompt on three assistants. They don't all share the same details:

| Assistant | What it supports |
| - | - |
| **ChatGPT** | Cites pages inline. Shares the web searches it runs before answering, shown on [Fan-out](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/fanout.md). Reports shopping cards, ads and maps. |
| **Google AI Mode** | Google's AI answer in search. Cites pages inline and reports shopping cards. |
| **Gemini** | Shows no inline citations, so it is left out of **Cited**. Reports no shopping cards, ads or maps. |

## Daily runs

Nothing runs until you click **Start daily tracking** at the end of setup. The first answers are requested right away. After that, every active prompt is asked once a day on every assistant, at the time of day you started tracking. A run usually takes a few minutes, and the reports update when it finishes.

What happens over your plan's daily allowance: [Plans and credits](https://docs.seomator.com/getting-started/plans.md#credits).

## Answers

An **answer** is what one assistant said to one prompt on one day. SEOmator keeps the full text and the sources the assistant used. Read any of them on [Answers](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/answers.md).

## Brands and competitors

A **tracked brand** is your own brand or one of your competitors. SEOmator looks for each tracked brand in every answer, by its name and its aliases, and checks that each match really names the brand. Brands you don't track are not counted in any metric, but SEOmator lists the ones the answers name as suggestions. Manage both on [Competitors](https://docs.seomator.com/setup/competitors.md).

When you change a brand's name or aliases, SEOmator recounts it in your past answers.

## Sources: read, cited and linked

An answer can use your site in three ways, and one answer can count in all three:

| Term | What happened | Metric |
| - | - | - |
| **Read** | The assistant retrieved your page: it is in the answer's source list. | **Retrieved** |
| **Cited** | The answer cites your page inline, next to the text it supports. | **Cited** |
| **Linked** | The answer's text links to your page. | **Linked** |

An answer can name your brand without reading your site, and it can read or cite your site without naming you. **Visibility** counts only answers that name your brand. For every metric and how it is counted, see [Metrics](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/metrics.md).

## Reports

Every report is built from the same answers and shares the same filter bar. See [Filter reports](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/filters.md).

| Report | The question it answers |
| - | - |
| [Insights](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/insights.md) | How often does AI name you, and who does it name instead? |
| [Answers](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/answers.md) | What exactly did each assistant say? |
| [Domains](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/domains.md) | Which sites do the assistants read and cite? |
| [URLs](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/urls.md) | Which single pages do the assistants read and cite? |
