# Metrics

> What every SEOmator report metric means, how it is counted, and how changes against the previous period work.

Every SEOmator report is built from the answers ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini give to your prompts. This page defines each metric in the reports. Every metric is shown with its counts, so you always see "Named in 42 of 378 answers", not only a percentage.

## Brand metrics

A tracked brand is your own brand or one of your [competitors](https://docs.seomator.com/setup/competitors.md). Brands you don't track are not counted in any metric.

| Metric | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Visibility** | Share of answers that name you. |
| **Named first** | Share of answers that name you before any other tracked brand. |
| **Position** | Your average place among the tracked brands an answer names. Lower is better: 1 is the top. |
| **Share of voice** | Your mentions out of all mentions of the tracked brands, counting every time a brand is named in an answer. Untracked brands are not counted. |
| **Retrieved** | Share of answers where the assistant read one of your pages: it is in the answer's source list. Reading a page does not mean the answer used it. |
| **Cited** | Share of ChatGPT and Google AI Mode answers that cite one of your pages inline, next to the text it supports. Gemini answers are left out: [why](https://docs.seomator.com/getting-started/how-it-works.md#assistants). |
| **Linked** | Share of answers whose text links to one of your pages. |

Shares are rounded to whole percents. Position is shown with one decimal.

### How Position is counted

In each answer, the tracked brands are ranked by where the answer first names them: the first one is 1, the next is 2, and so on. An untracked brand named earlier does not move the rank. Position is the average of your ranks in the answers that name you, so answers that don't name you don't count toward it. The same rank decides **Named first**: you are named first when your rank is 1.

### Named, read, cited and linked are different

An answer can name your brand without reading your site, and it can read or cite your site without naming you. One answer can count in Retrieved, Cited and Linked at the same time:

* **Retrieved**: your page is in the answer's source list.
* **Cited**: the answer cites your page inline, next to the text it supports.
* **Linked**: the answer's text links to your page.

Visibility counts only answers that name your brand.

## Source metrics

[Domains](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/domains.md) and [URLs](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/urls.md) measure a site or a single page instead of a brand.

| Metric | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Retrieved** | Share of answers whose assistant read the site or page: it is in the answer's source list. Reading a page does not mean the answer used it. |
| **Cited** | Share of ChatGPT and Google AI Mode answers that cite the site or page inline, next to the text it supports. Gemini answers are left out: [why](https://docs.seomator.com/getting-started/how-it-works.md#assistants). |
| **Citation position** | Its average place among the pages an answer cites, 1 being cited first. |
| **Pages** | On a domain's page: how many of its pages the assistants read in the period. |
| **Answers** | On a page's own page: how many answers read or cite it. |

## Answers totals

The tiles on [Answers](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/answers.md):

| Tile | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Answers** | Answers that were collected and read in the period. The change compares with the same number of days before it. |
| **Your brand named** | Share of these answers that name your brand. The change is in percentage points. |
| **Used web sources** | Share of these answers with at least one page in their source list. |
| **Average citations** | Inline citations per answer. Gemini answers count with zero, so they lower the average. |

## Fan-out totals

The tiles on [Fan-out](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/fanout.md). They cover ChatGPT answers only.

| Tile | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Different searches** | Searches ChatGPT ran, each counted once. |
| **Times run** | All searches, counting repeats. |
| **Answers that searched** | Share of ChatGPT answers that ran at least one search. |
| **Top term** | The two-word term that appears in the most searches. |

## Changes against the previous period

When **Compare to previous period** is on in the date menu, each metric shows its change next to the value. The previous period has the same number of days and ends just before your selected range. For example, **Last 7 days** is compared with the 7 days before it. How to set the period: [Filter reports](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/filters.md#date-range).

* Shares change in points, shown as `pts`. Going from 20% to 25% is `+5.0 pts`, not +25%.
* Position changes as a plain number. A lower Position is better, so a negative change is good.

To keep the comparison fair, SEOmator compares only the prompts and assistants measured in both periods, so a new prompt can't look like growth. An assistant with fewer than 90% of its planned answers analyzed in either period is left out of the change. Insights then names it, for example "The change leaves out Gemini, which lacked complete data in one of the periods", and the projects list shows the change "without Gemini".

When a change can't be computed, the info text says why:

* **Not compared: one period isn't fully collected yet.**
* **Not compared: your prompts or brands changed between the periods.**
* **Not compared: the previous period has no data.**
* **Not compared: no answers in this period.**

Which prompt types the metrics count: [Filter reports](https://docs.seomator.com/reports/filters.md#type).
